Wolves: When Werewolves Meet Dark Family Drama
Wolves is a Canadian horror-thriller film released in 2014, directed and written by David Hayter (screenwriter for X-Men and Watchmen). Starring Jason Momoa in his pre-Aquaman days and Lucas Till (Havok in X-Men), the film attempts to combine classic werewolf mythology with a Twilight-esque coming-of-age vibe, but with much denser blood and darkness.
Brief Synopsis
Cayden Richards (Lucas Till), a handsome and popular 18-year-old teenager, suddenly transforms into a werewolf after a bloody night that leaves both his parents dead. Running from the police and traumatized, he searches for his origins in the remote town of Lupine Ridge. There he meets two werewolf factions: the kind farmer Wild Joe (John Pyper-Ferguson), the farmer Angel (Merritt Patterson), and… Connor (Jason Momoa), a brutal alpha who rules the town with an iron fist. It turns out Cayden has a very personal blood connection to Connor—and that secret could destroy everything.
What makes it interesting?
• Jason Momoa completely steals the show as Connor—charismatic, wild, and creepy all at once. This is one of his best "bad guy" performances before becoming Khal Drogo 2.0.
• The werewolf transformations are quite old-school (without excessive CGI), using practical effects that make the bites feel painful.
• The atmosphere is dark and moody, more akin to An American Werewolf in London than a teen romance.
• The family twist at the end is quite surprising (and somewhat taboo), although some might guess it halfway through the film.
Conclusion
Wolves isn't the best werewolf movie ever made, but if you like a fierce Jason Momoa, spilled blood, and a "well, that happened" family plot twist, this 91-minute film is highly entertaining for a weekend night. The IMDb rating of 5.3/10 actually feels underrated—for fans of the genre, it's a solid 6.5–7/10.
Fun fact: Lucas Till said filming his first transformation scene was very painful because the prosthetic teeth and contact lenses prevented him from blinking for hours!
Watch it tonight, dim the lights, and get ready to howl with Cayden!
