Ouija: The Ouija Board That Actually Kills

Ever played with an ouija board as a kid and feared the "spirit" would get angry? The movie Ouija (2014) takes that fear, magnifies it 100 times, and throws it onto the screen in typical Blumhouse Productions fashion: cheap, fast, and effectively creepy.

Directed by Stiles White, this 89-minute film stars Olivia Cooke (who later blew up with House of the Dragon) as Laine Morris, a teenager who just lost her best friend, Debbie (Shelley Hennig). Debbie is found having committed suicide in a gruesome way—hanging herself while staring at an antique ouija board. Laine is convinced it wasn't a normal suicide. Along with her friends and boyfriend, Trevor (Daren Kagasoff), they decide to "ask Debbie directly" using the same board.

The classic ouija rules are reiterated from the very first minute:

• Never play alone

• Don't play in a graveyard

• Always say "goodbye"

Naturally, every single one of these rules is broken.

What makes Ouija enjoyable is its simplicity. It's not a smart film like Hereditary or The Conjuring, but it knows exactly what the 2014 teen audience wanted: continuous jump scares, pale faces in mirrors, mouths sewn shut with thread, and a spirit named "D.Z." who turns out to have a childhood grudge. The visuals are dark, the soundtrack is loud, and every time the planchette moves on its own, you hold your breath along with them.

Despite being heavily criticized by critics (Rotten Tomatoes 6%, Metacritic 28/100) for its plot holes and standard acting, the film was a massive box office success: made with a budget of $5 million, it grossed $103 million worldwide. The result? A sequel, Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016), which turned out to be much better and critically praised.

So, Ouija (2014) is like eating potato chips: you know it's junk food, but you finish the whole bag in one sitting anyway. It's perfect for watching on a Friday night with friends while screaming, then swearing you'll never touch an ouija board again (at least until next week).

The bottom line: if you're looking for serious horror, just skip this one. But if you want light horror that gives you jump scares and laughs with friends, Ouija 2014 is the perfect guilty pleasure. And remember... if the planchette writes "Hi friend" by itself in a dark room, run immediately. Don't ask anything else.
