Northmen – A Viking Saga (2014): Brutal Vikings Without Hollywood Romanticism.

Forget the muscular, handsome Vikings from TV series. Northmen – A Viking Saga is a European B-movie that is grimy, bloody, and very honest about the 9th century. Directed by Claudio Fäh (Sniper: Reloaded), this film has a small budget but a lot of guts.

The story is simple: A group of exiled Vikings led by Asbjörn (Tom Hopper) shipwreck on the coast of Scotland. They just want to go home, but they accidentally kidnap Princess Inghean (Charlie Murphy), the daughter of King Dunchaid. The King immediately sends a cruel mercenary "Wolf Pack" led by Hjorr (Ed Skrein) and Bovarr (Anatole Taubman) to hunt them down until death.

What makes this film cool:

• Super brutal and realistic sword fights (no 300-style slow-motion)

• Filming locations in South Africa that still manage to feel cold and muddy

• Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse from True Blood) plays a Christian monk who joins the fight

• Minimal dialogue, maximum action—90 minutes without filler

Weaknesses:

• The acting of some players is a bit stiff

• The plot is very straight-forward, almost no twists

• The blood effects sometimes look cheap

But precisely because it doesn't pretend to be smart, Northmen is one of the most "honest" Viking films of the 2010s. No mythology, no dragons, just wild humans surviving with axes and swords.

In short: If you miss old-school, bloody, unapologetic medieval action films, this is a hidden gem that people often overlook.
