Iceman 2014: A Wuxia Adventure Frozen in Time

Iceman (2014) is a Hong Kong action-fantasy film directed by Law Wing-cheong, a 3D remake of the 1989 classic The Iceman Cometh (produced by Yuen Biao, starring Donnie Yen). This time, Donnie Yen returns as the lead actor and producer, alongside Huang Shengyi, Wang Baoqiang, and Simon Yam. 

Brief Synopsis:

He Ying (Donnie Yen), a 16th-century Ming Dynasty imperial guard, is accused of treason and, along with his three sworn brothers, is cursed to be buried alive in ice for hundreds of years. When they "awaken" in present-day Hong Kong due to a construction project accident, He Ying must adapt to the modern world while hunting down his nemesis, Niehu (Simon Yam), who has also been reawakened. The epic battle between the past and the present is unavoidable! 

Film Strengths:

• Brutal and fast-paced Donnie Yen-style kung fu action, enhanced by stunning 3D slow-motion effects (especially the sword fight scene on a rooftop at night).

• Fresh, Hong Kong-style slapstick humor, particularly through Wang Baoqiang's character as a naive soldier confused by modern cars, mobile phones, and toilets.

• Beautiful ice and snow visual effects, despite having a more limited budget compared to Hollywood films. 

Overall, Iceman 2014 is light entertainment that successfully blends traditional wuxia with "fish out of water" cultural comedy. It's a good watch if you're a Donnie Yen fan or feeling nostalgic for a less serious Hong Kong action film. The IMDb rating of 4.7 might be too low—if you enjoyed Ip Man but want a more relaxed and funny version, this film is worth adding to your watchlist!
