Smokin' Aces (2006): Total Chaos in Vegas, So Much Fun!

Imagine Tarantino meets Guy Ritchie, then add 20 crazy characters, 1 hotel at Lake Tahoe, and the order: "kill one person within 24 hours." The result? Smokin’ Aces – an action-comedy-thriller film that keeps the audience glued from the first minute until the end.

The core story is simple: Buddy “Aces” Israel (Jeremy Piven), a magician and mafia informant who is about to reveal all his boss's secrets to the FBI. The bounty on his head? 1 million dollars. As a result, dozens of the craziest hitmen in America swarm the same hotel to grab that “last contract”.

What makes this film crazy:

• Dream ensemble cast: Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds (still innocent!), Alicia Keys & Taraji P. Henson as lesbian assassins with chainsaws, Common, Chris Pine (pre-Captain Kirk), Jason Bateman being funny in a diaper costume, plus a trio of psychobilly neo-Nazis who love playing with chainsaws.

• Non-stop action: shootouts in hotel corridors, elevators, to the rooftop – the camera moves like someone in a panic.

• Consecutive twists in the last 20 minutes that made people yell “WHAT?!” loudly in the cinema.

Directed by Joe Carnahan (who would later make The Grey and Boss Level), Smokin’ Aces is full of sarcastic dialogue, cartoonish violence, and a pumping rock soundtrack. The rating is R all the way – blood, swearing, drugs, everything is thrown in without censorship.

Box office: US$57 million (pretty decent for an original film), but most importantly: it became an instant cult favorite. To this day, if someone mentions the “Tremor brothers” or “Georgia Sykes”, fans immediately sing along.

In short: if you like a movie where you can turn off your brain for 109 minutes to watch crazy people kill each other in the coolest way possible, Smokin’ Aces must be on your watchlist tonight.
