RoboCop: A Brave Remake, But It Never Quite Escaped the Shadow of the Original.
The 2014 version of RoboCop is a remake full of guts: director José Padilha (Elite Squad) tried to transform Paul Verhoeven's ultra-violent 1987 satire into a modern sci-fi drama that is more "human," more serious, and more relevant to contemporary issues of drones, corporations, and privacy.
Joel Kinnaman plays Alex Murphy, a Detroit cop nearly killed by a car bomb, who is then "saved" by the giant corporation OmniCorp (led by Michael Keaton) by turning him into the cyborg RoboCop. This time, we see the process from the inside: how Murphy's consciousness slowly returns, how he struggles to maintain his humanity, and how his wife (Abbie Cornish) and child become emotional stakes.
Strengths of this version:
• Super clean and sleek visuals (the glossy black armor is truly iconic)
• More realistic and brutal action (especially the training scene with the ED-209 robots)
• Top-class supporting cast: Gary Oldman as a morally conflicted scientist, Samuel L. Jackson as an insane, ultra-patriotic TV host
• A banging new soundtrack from Pedro Bromfman
This film that is actually good and smart by 2014 blockbuster standards, but which still lives in the shadow of the 1987 masterpiece. Many people hate it for daring to change too much, while many others like it for succeeding in making RoboCop feel relevant again in the era of AI and giant corporations.
In short: Not a replacement, but a worthwhile addition to watch once. If you can accept it as an "alternative version," you'll enjoy it.
Duration: 117 minutes
IMDb Rating: 6.1/10
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Crime
Suitable for: Fans of Dredd (2012), The Batman (2022), or those who like sci-fi with heart
The coldest quote:
“I wouldn’t buy that for a dollar!” – Samuel L. Jackson still says the legendary line, but this time with a cynical smile.
Watch it if you want a RoboCop that is more emotional, more modern, and still has satisfying shootouts!
