I Am Soldier: The Real Struggle Behind the British SAS Green Beret

I Am Soldier (2014) is a British action-thriller film that "dares" to show just how brutal and deadly the selection process is for the SAS (Special Air Service), the most elite special forces in the world. Directed by Ronnie Thompson, the film stars Tom Hughes as Mickey Tomlinson, an ordinary military chef who desperately joins the SAS selection to prove himself.

This is not a typical shoot-'em-up movie. Eighty percent of the film's duration focuses precisely on the notoriously cruel selection stages:

• Non-stop interrogation for days on end

• Forced marches of dozens of kilometers with heavy loads in the Welsh mountains

• "Resistance to interrogation" training that makes the audience breathless

• Mental and physical destruction pushed to human limits.

Tom Hughes successfully portrays Mickey very convincingly: from an enthusiastic young man to someone nearly giving up completely. Noel Clarke and Alex Reid also deliver solid performances as the cold and unforgiving instructors.

The strengths of this film:

• Very realistic (many former SAS members acted as consultants)

• Minimal CGI; all the action and suffering feel "real"

• Psychological tension is more dominant than shootouts

The weaknesses:

• The ending is somewhat cliché and rushed (suddenly turning into a standard rescue mission)

• Supporting characters are underdeveloped

Nevertheless, I Am Soldier remains one of the best films ever made about the special forces selection process (even tougher than Act of Valor or Lone Survivor in its training sequences).

In short: If you're curious about "just how crazy is the SAS selection?", this film is the answer. It is not light entertainment, but it is very satisfying for fans of realistic military films.

Duration: 84 minutes

IMDb Rating: 4.5/10 (very underrated, it actually deserves closer to 6.5+)

Genre: Action, Thriller, War

Suitable for: Fans of Zero Dark Thirty, American Sniper, or those who enjoy military "underdog" stories.

"Pain is temporary. Failure is forever." – A tagline that sends shivers down your spine throughout the movie.
