Dawn of the Planet of the Apes : When Humans and Apes Both Lost Everything.

Ten years after a deadly virus destroyed human civilization, the California redwood forest is now ruled by a colony of intelligent apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis in the most heartbreaking motion-capture performance of his career). They live in peace, speaking, hunting with horses, and building a small civilization with rules. Until one day, a group of human survivors from San Francisco enters their territory to restore power to a dam. One small mistake, one panicked shot, and that fragile peace instantly shatters.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a much darker, more mature, and emotional sequel than its predecessor, Rise (2011). Directed by Matt Reeves (who later made The Batman), the film is like a Shakespearean tragedy in the forest: ambition, betrayal, misunderstanding, and a war that could have actually been avoided.

In the apes' corner is the wise but burdened Caesar, and Koba (Toby Kebbell), a former victim of human experiments who is full of vengeance. In the humans' corner are Malcolm (Jason Clarke) who wants peace and Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) who is ready for all-out war. All the characters are gray; there are no pure heroes or villains. Even the most iconic scene, Koba grabbing a machine gun and smiling cynically while saying "Apes... together... strong", feels both chilling and tragic.

Michael Seresin's cinematography is stunning: 80% of the film is set in foggy forests with sunlight filtering through the leaves, while the final battle in the San Francisco tower on a rainy night feels epic and brutal. Michael Giacchino's grand score makes every scene feel like the end of the world.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 91%, the audience score was 88%, and the box office crossed $710 million worldwide. Critics praised the film as "a rare blockbuster that has brains and heart". Even Roger Ebert.com called it "one of the best science-fiction films of the decade".

In short: if you like stories about war, forgiveness, and what it means to be "human," Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a masterpiece.
