In 2013, after a seven-year hiatus from the previous film, the parody franchise returned with Scary Movie 5. This film came with many significant changes. Unlike its predecessors, it no longer featured the iconic characters Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks and was directed by a new filmmaker, Malcolm D. Lee, with David Zucker as a producer and writer. The result was a more focused parody experience, though for some critics and fans, the film was considered the weakest in the series.

A Plot Inspired by the New Era of Horror Films

The main plot of the film clearly mocks the box office hit horror films of that era, especially Paranormal Activity and Mama. The story centers on a couple, Dan (Simon Rex) and Jody (Ashley Tisdale), who have just brought home their three lost nieces from a mysterious cabin. Of course, as soon as they arrive home, various paranormal events begin to threaten them.

Dan and Jody, who are desperate to get rid of the haunting demon, set up surveillance cameras throughout their house, mimicking the style of found footage films. Throughout the movie, they are also assisted by paranormal experts and a "dream extractor" in their attempt to save their family from the malevolent entity.

Parody of Other Popular Films

Just like previous Scary Movie films, this one doesn't just target one genre. Scary Movie 5 also makes fun of other popular films from various genres, including:

• Black Swan: A parody of the ballet scenes.

• Inception: References to dreams and the subconscious.

• Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Featured through Dan's work as a primate researcher.

• Evil Dead: A parody of the scenes inside the mysterious cabin.

Criticism and Reception

Although the film featured many famous guest stars like Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, and Snoop Dogg, Scary Movie 5 failed to receive the same positive response as the previous films. Many critics complained that the humor felt stale and less relevant, and the storyline was disjointed. However, for fans who simply want to enjoy silly humor and shameless jokes, the film remains an entertaining watch.

Despite the negative reviews, Scary Movie 5 is still an important part of the franchise, showing how a parody film series attempted to adapt to constantly changing movie trends.
